Make your own Fabric Softener

by Clipinista on February 26, 2012

Here is a recipe that I found to make your own Fabric Softener. I have been using it for a couple of months now and it has saved me tons of money!

  • 1 cup baking soda
  • 6 cups distilled white vinegar
  • 8 cups water
  • 10 -15 drops orangeessential oils (optional) or 10 -15 dropslemonessential oils (optional) or 10 -15 drops essential oils , of choice (optional)

Directions:

  1. You will need a one gallon container.
  2. First add the baking soda to the plastic container.
  3. Next add 1 cup of water to start with.
  4. Slowly add the vinegar to the bottle as the vinegar and baking soda will start to fizz.
  5. Then add the rest of the water swirling around & cover venting the top a few times.
  6. Last add the essential oil.
  7. Add 1 cup in your final rinse cycle for each load but give the bottle a good shake to stir up the essential oil if using.
I found this recipe on Food Network

Thanks! I think I’m gonna try this. Seems cheap enough, I think I have everything but the essential oil. And in case it’s not what I like I can just get rid of it with out a great loss. I’ll give it to my mother to try too, she’s pretty thrifty.

Christa, that is awesome ! I absolutely HATE those stray hairs that get stuck inside my shirts and tickle my tummy during the day! I am forever sticking my hand up inside my shirt!
With three teen girls in the house there are ALOT of stray hairs in my dryer!

I keep a big jug of vinegar in my laundry room. Just add a cup or two along with your detergent to remove stains and odours (even pet urine). Washing soda is routinely used in laundry. I don’t see an advantage to mixing the two. The only time I use them together is to clear out sink drains – dump a cup of baking soda down the drain, follow with a cup of vinegar, and stand back!

I am going to try this one out! It’s the first “recipe” that I’ve seen that truly uses only non-chemical ingredients. I understand that using the conditioner versions of the recipe make it very economical compared to actual store bought softeners, but conditioners still have the chemicals that I am trying to break free from in all of my homemade cleaning products. Can’t wait to give this a try!
