Frugal Tips: How to make your own ALL-NATURAL Insect Repellent

by Clipinista on March 10, 2012

I though I would share with you my recipe for homemade insect repellent, it is getting to be that time of year. I hate spraying harsh chemicals on my children!  So here it is, it’s quick and easy and will save you tons of money and stress! Whether you know it or not Lavender Essential Oil (not fragrance oil!) is a natural insect repellent. You can buy 4oz at Vitacost for about $4 after the FREE $10 credit. Now all you needs is a carrier to put it on your body. I go to the Dollar Tree and buy a bottle of there unscented body lotion 20 oz. I pour about half the lotion out and put in 3 Tablespoon of the Lavender Oil in and mix it up, gradually adding back the lotion I poured out. You can color it if you want with food coloring but I wouldn’t bother, Lavender hates color and it will just get bleached out in the sun. I keep a 2oz bottle in my purse, car and picnic basket. You not only smell good but are bug free. Nature does it naturally!

This should save you about $10 this summer and the best part IT IS ALL NATURAL! I am going to make a batch and give them away! This is a cute idea for an end of the year teacher gift or maybe put it in a mother’s day basket!

  2. Using the half container of lotion that was set aside mix in 1-3 tablespoons of Lavender oil depending on how much lotion you have. 3 tablespoons would be a good amount for a 20 oz bottle of lotion.

I love the idea of making my own insect repellant, but I was wondering if I could use anything other than Lavender. My daughter is acutely sensitive to ANYTHING with lavender in it and breaks out in a rash. I know the bugs will be horrible this year with such a mild winter too.

wierd question but does that mean that lavendar plants would repel them also? Our neighborhood park has a horrible mosquito problem (none of the kids can go anywhere near it or they’ll be covered in at least 30 of them instantly!). I’m wondering if I could get them to plant lavendar over there and if it would help control the mosqitos. If so, I might put some in our yard too!

If you happen to know of an ant repellant that is safe to use in the home, I would love to hear about it. I have ants in my kitchen that are driving me crazy and it’s not even spring yet! Thanks!

For your ants Theresa, mint does the trick. Wether its mint by the plant or mint oil, it works.

We use white vinegar in a spray bottle and it chases them away fast. If they get inside we spray around where we see them and then all over the porch and door frame. It works for us and we’ve done this for years.

Theresa: Vinegar, peppermint, and spearmint. Spray just plain vinegar around their trails and all points of entry of your house. Plant peppermint or spearmint around points of entry at your house as well. (:

To Theresa…..I bought this new raid home defense (I think thats what it’s called) and its in a bottle with an automatic trigger. It comes out in a sorta gel kinda thing that you spray around your windows, doors, vents or anywhere bugs come in. It make an invisible “barrier” that bugs hate and lasts up to 6 or 9 months I believe. I used it last year and only a couple of bugs were found! I’m noticing them now more so I will spray again. It is safe once it dries. I wouldn’t let kids or pets near it wet. Hope that helps!

If you put ajax cleanser on a piece of foil on the floor. The ants wil take it bake to the nest and it will keep them away. I use an all natural bug killer around my house. It is called Orange Guard. I spray that stuff around my woodwork and were ever I’ve seen bugs. It will kill them. You can buy it locally or QVC carries it.

The other thing to do for ants is to put down a line of cayenne pepper where you fear they may be entering. They will NOT cross it. Good luck!

Theresa ants are drawn to moisture. You can use Baking soda or Borax all around your baseboards and where ants can get in. Like cracks near doors or windows.

Haven not tried this but i would reccommend NOT putting any sort of food coloring in it, that stuff stains so bad!!!

I put bay leaves around. I had Ants twice last year cleaned out cabt. tossed open boxes.
and I had the little ants again did it all over again. read about te bay leaves. I layed them in the cabts. in the bath room. Knock on wood no ants yet. I am not saying why it works it just did for me and that was a blessing. I thought why not give this a try.
